Ice dams form when accumulated snow on a sloping roof melts and flows downward, typically beneath the snow and out of sight, until it reaches freezing temperature air at the lower edge of the roof, near the eaves or gutter line. As the once flowing water begins to freeze, ice begins to accumulate at this boundary forming a dam. The dam grows as more water creeps out from the snow cover above, eventually blocking proper drainage when further melting occurs.
