What Good Gutters Actually Do

Your gutters aren’t just hanging there for looks. When they’re installed right, they’re quietly protecting thousands of dollars worth of foundation work, preventing basement flooding, and keeping your landscaping from washing away every time it rains.

Good gutter installation means you stop worrying about water pooling around your foundation. You stop dealing with ice dams backing up under your shingles. You stop watching your flower beds get destroyed by water pouring off your roof.

Minnesota weather doesn’t mess around, and neither should your gutters. When they’re doing their job properly, you barely think about them – which is exactly how it should be.

Here's How We Handle Your Installation

First, we come out and assess your current situation. We look at your roofline, check the fascia boards, and measure everything properly. If you’re planning other exterior work, we coordinate the gutter installation to happen at the right time in the sequence.

Next, we fabricate your seamless gutters on-site to fit your home exactly. No joints where they don’t need to be, which means fewer potential leak points down the road. We install proper hangers every 24 inches and make sure the pitch is correct so water flows where it should.

Finally, we test everything before we leave. We run water through the system, check all the downspouts, and make sure you understand how to maintain your new gutters. If we’re doing other exterior work at the same time, we coordinate everything so you’re not dealing with multiple crews showing up at different times.

Seamless Gutter Installation Services

What's Included In Your Installation

You get seamless aluminum gutters custom-fabricated for your home, not pieced together from sections that will eventually leak. We install proper fascia-mounted hangers, not the cheap spike-and-ferrule systems that pull loose over time.

Your installation includes downspouts positioned to move water away from your foundation, plus we install splash blocks or connect to underground drainage if needed. We also handle gutter guards if you want them – though we’ll tell you honestly whether they make sense for your situation.

If your fascia boards need repair or replacement, we handle that too. Same with soffit work or any other exterior items that need attention while we’re there. That’s the advantage of working with a full exterior company instead of just a gutter installer.

Most residential gutter installations take one to two days, depending on the size and complexity of your home. Simple ranch homes often get done in a day, while larger two-story homes or houses with complex rooflines might take two days. Weather can affect timing – we don’t install gutters in rain or high winds because it’s not safe and the installation won’t be as precise. If we’re coordinating your gutter installation with other exterior work like roofing or siding, we schedule everything so the gutters go on at the right time in the sequence, which might spread the timeline out but saves you from having multiple contractors disrupting your schedule.
Seamless gutters are formed from one continuous piece of aluminum that’s custom-fabricated on-site to fit your home’s exact measurements. Sectional gutters are pre-made pieces that get joined together with connectors and sealant. The main advantage of seamless is fewer joints, which means fewer places for leaks to develop over time. Sectional gutters will eventually leak at those connection points – it’s not a matter of if, but when. Seamless gutters can still leak if they’re installed poorly or if the material gets damaged, but you eliminate the most common failure points. The cost difference isn’t huge, and seamless gutters look cleaner because you don’t have visible seams every ten feet.
Gutter guards can be helpful, but they’re not magic. If you have a lot of trees over your roof, guards can reduce how often you need to clean your gutters, but they won’t eliminate maintenance completely. The micro-mesh style guards work better than the solid covers or foam inserts, but they cost more upfront. Honestly, if you only have a few trees and don’t mind cleaning gutters twice a year, you might not need guards at all. If you’re older or don’t want to deal with ladder work, guards make more sense. We’ll look at your specific situation and tell you whether guards are worth it for your home, rather than just trying to sell you the most expensive option.
Fascia boards that are soft, rotted, or pulling away from the house need replacement before new gutters go on. You can’t securely mount gutters to damaged fascia – they’ll just pull loose again. We check the fascia boards during our initial assessment by looking for obvious damage and testing areas that look questionable. Sometimes fascia boards look fine from the ground but have rot behind the existing gutters. If we find damage during the installation, we’ll show you exactly what needs to be fixed and explain your options. We can handle fascia replacement as part of the gutter job, which is more efficient than having separate contractors come out. Good fascia boards are crucial for a long-lasting gutter installation.
Most residential homes use either 5-inch or 6-inch gutters. The right size depends on your roof area, roof pitch, and how much rain your gutters need to handle during heavy storms. Steeper roofs shed water faster, so they might need larger gutters even if the square footage isn’t huge. Very large roofs or roofs with multiple valleys concentrating water into one area definitely need 6-inch gutters. We calculate the roof area and consider the pitch to determine what size will handle Minnesota’s heavy rains and snow melt without overflowing. Most ranch homes do fine with 5-inch gutters, but two-story homes or homes with complex rooflines often benefit from 6-inch. We’ll measure and recommend the right size for your specific situation.
Gutter installation costs vary based on the size of your home, the type of gutters you choose, and whether any fascia repair is needed. Seamless aluminum gutters typically run between $8-15 per linear foot installed, depending on complexity. A typical ranch home might need 120-150 feet of gutters, while larger two-story homes could need 200+ feet. Additional costs come from things like extra downspouts, gutter guards, or fascia board replacement. We provide detailed written estimates that break down exactly what’s included, so you know what you’re paying for. Since we’re a full exterior company, we can often give you better pricing if you’re planning other exterior work at the same time. The key is getting quality installation – cheap gutter jobs end up costing more when they fail early.
